Native American Protection Symbol

Native American Indians were a deeply spiritual people and they communicated their history, thoughts, ideas and dreams from generation to generation through symbols. Native American symbols are generally geometric portrayals of celestial bodies, natural phenomena and animal designs. The Protection symbol is depicted as two arrows within a circle. The weapons were symbols of the major form of defense for the American Native Indian and the circle was another powerful symbol. A circle around another Native American symbol signifies family ties, closeness & protection. The circle has no break and cannot be broken. The black center circle depicts the air symbol which represents life.

Protection Ritual

Here is the Protection Ritual we used at tonight’s Welcoming Circle.

PROTECTION RITUAL

ANOINTING FOR PROTECTION [David Taliesin)
7-9 drops of Hyssop Essential Oil
1/4 cup olive oi

May the Divine Presence protect you
and keep you safe from all harm.

CASTING THE CIRCLE—Protection Prayer

The Light of the Divine surrounds us
The Love of the Divine enfolds us
The Power of the Divine protects us
The Presence of the Divine watches over us
Wherever we are, the Divine is. All is well.

CALLING THE QUARTERS – Face each direction as you speak. [David Taliesin]

Guardians and Ancestors of the East, Spirits of Air, we ask for your protective energies to be with us in our circle tonight. Protect our spirits from negative thoughts that rob us of our power, and hostile words that leave us feeling weak and defenseless. Hail and welcome!

Guardians and Ancestors of the South, Spirits of Fire, we ask for your protective energies to be with us in our circle tonight. Protect our minds from conflicting voices that make it difficult for us to discern the way forward, and bad advice that is disguised as truth. Hail and welcome!

Guardians and Ancestors of the West, Spirits of Water, we ask for your protective energies to be with us in our circle tonight. Protect our emotions from misdirected anger that can harm the wrong person, and media hype that leaves us in a continual state of panic. Hail and welcome!

Guardians and Ancestors of the North, Spirits of Earth, we ask for your protective energies to be with us in our circle tonight. Protect our bodies from people who seek to do us physical harm, and disease that robs us of health and vitality. Hail and welcome!

Divine Presence who is known to us by many names, we ask for your protective energies to be with us in our circle tonight. We seek to serve you, to make this world a better place, to be agents of change in a troubled world. Shield us from everything that prevents us from doing this sacred work. Hail and welcome!

PROTECTION MANDALA (Handout for everyone)

protectionmandalaThe protection mandala you have in front of you is governed by the element of air. Notice the hatched cross barrier. It is like an army of crossed swords and the heart center is well guarded by a unified group of individuals, symbolizing both warrior and nurturer traits.

This mandala carries the spirit of the bear. She brings her protective nature; she stands her ground; makes her presence known. She reminds us to also know instinctively when to retreat and how to best prepare for any periods of waiting.

As you contemplate upon this mandala, take the time to color it if you like. Allow it to speak to you. Your spirit may be asking you to be selective with your power. You must always trust your instincts, listen to whether your heart is telling you to stand up for yourself and your beliefs, or when to stay away from conflict, for it will not benefit you in any way to always be on the defensive. Protect your heart, but also know when to fight for it.

ENERGY RAISING TO EMPOWER THE MANDALA

CLOSING THE CIRCLE [David Taliesin]

Guardians and Spirits of the North, we thank you for your protective energy and caring presence in our circle this night. Stay if you will, go if you must. We bid you farewell.

Guardians and Spirits of the West, we thank you for your protective energy and caring presence in our circle this night. Stay if you will, go if you must. We bid you farewell.

Guardians and Spirits of the South, we thank you for your protective energy and caring presence in our circle this night. Stay if you will, go if you must. We bid you farewell.

Guardians and Spirits of the East, we thank you for your protective energy and caring presence in our circle this night. Stay if you will, go if you must. We bid you farewell.

Divine Presence, whose energy fills and directs everything, we thank you for your protective energy and caring presence in our circle tonight. As we leave this place give us the wisdom to know when to fight and when to retreat; when to speak up and when to remain silent. We bid you farewell.

The circle is open but never unbroken
Because it is a circle woven in love.
Whatever energy is left in this space
We return to the earth with a spirit of gratitude.

Merry meet, merry part, and merry meet again.

DIY: Feather Sacred Smoke Wand

sm00Over the past several months birds have been leaving me the gift of feathers while walking my dog in the park. I took it as a sign and began thinking about making my own feather sacred smoke wand with a few of them. There are a number of tutorials online for how to do this but this is my process to create a simple but elegant wand using mostly natural materials:

Step One: Prepare a stick for your wand. I did this prayerfully and picked up a piece of maple I found that fit my hand perfectly. I stripped off the bark, took a knife and cut off the little buds and then put a little teak oil on it. You could also stain it or leave it natural.

sm02

Step Two: String feathers with twine. I used the Native American method of stringing feathers. You can find a video of this on YouTube.

sm03

Step Three: Tie feathers to stick. I did each one individually, using a square knot. Then I put a dab of Gorilla glue on the knot before snipping off the ends.

sm04
sm05
sm06

Step 4: Wrap with suede/leather cord. I used the same method to attach the leather that I did to attach the twine to the feathers. Start with a loop that’s pointing toward the finished end. Wrap the cord around the stick. Finally tuck the end of the cord through the loop and pull the string on the top until the loop closes and secures the cord. [I hope that’s not thoroughly confusing!]

sm07
sm08
sm09

Step 5: Snip the ends of the suede or attach them to the wand with Gorilla glue. You can also add any other embellishments you like.

sm00

So, that’s how I did it. I’d be curious to hear from others who have made similar wands. How did you make yours? Happy crafting!

Yarrow: Herbe de St. Joseph, Carpenter’s Weed

yarrowThe use of yarrow as a healing herb and magical plant is well documented. It has been utilized by Pagans and Christians alike. The Latin name (Achillea millefolium) is derived from the Greek hero Achilles who, legend has it, carried yarrow with him into battle and used it to stop the flow of blood from the wounds of his soldiers. This is where two of it’s nicknames come from: staunchweed and soldier’s woundwort.

The Christianized version of this tale is connected to the French name of yarrow: herbe de St. Joseph. Legend has it that after Joseph hurt himself while working in his carpenter’s shop, the infant Jesus brought him some yarrow and instantly healed the wound. Clearly, this is an adapted version of Achilles story, but I think it’s really fun!

The biggest misconception online regarding yarrow is that it was part of the Anglo-Saxon 9 herbs charm to ward off illness and the demonic. This charm was used by both Pagans and Christians. Unless someone can cite a source for this, my understanding is that the 9 herbs were mugwort, plantain, watercress, chamomile, stinging nettle, crab apple, chervil, fennel and “attorlothe” which is identified as viper’s bulgos, cockspur grass, betony or black nightshade. Yarrow is nowhere to be found among the nine herbs so it appears to be a case of too many people “copy and pasting” from another web site without verifying the source! (I welcome anyone with more info than I could gather here!)

Two of the most interesting ancient Christians spells using yarrow are one for demonic possession and another for love. (I recommend neither!) Regarding the first, yarrow was part of a bundle of 13 herbs that were made into a “spew drink” which caused the inflicted to allegedly vomit out the demonic spirit! Seven masses were said over this herbal concoction to which garlic and holy water were added. The finishing touch was that is was supposed to be drunk from an upside down church bell. You gotta admit it’s pretty dramatic!

In the love spell, a girl was supposed to pick a sprig of yarrow from the grave of a deceased young man, reciting the following poem:

Yarrow, sweet Yarrow, the first I have found,
In the name of Jesus Christ, I pluck it from the ground.
As Jesus loved sweet Mary and took her for his dear,
So in a dream this night,
I hope my true love will appear.

She then was told to place the sprig under her pillow until her true loved appeared. This charm is interesting because it is a thinly veiled ancient Pagan charm with the names of Jesus and Mary added to it. This is yet another piece of evidence that supports my theory that many converts to Christianity brought their Pagan traditions with them into the Christian faith. The Church was unable to suppress these traditions so they adapted and incorporated them into the rites and practices of the Church.

The final interesting use of yarrow I came across was found on http://www.sacredearth.com.  They wrote “A special soup of herbs is the traditional dish for Maundy Thursday, the Thursday before Easter. This soup contained 9 holy healing herbs, one of which is Yarrow. This soup was believed to ward off all sickness and disease and dispel all evil influences for the whole of the coming year.” I had never heard of this before but it fits the history of the use of yarrow quite well.

Ixtab: Mayan Goddess of Suicide

ixtab

Ixtab: Dresden Codex

Suicide is a difficult subject to address because it’s so painful. I have lost three friends over the years due to suicide and each death has left its mark upon me. This is further complicated in Christian circles by the belief some espouse that suicide is an unforgivable sin. For the record, I am not one of those people! If God is “gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love” as the Torah says, how can this same God not embrace those whose pain and lack of clear thinking led them to such a desperate act. All three of my friends were not really in their right minds when they chose to take their lives. I cannot worship a Divine being who would refuse to embrace these lost lambs and condemn them to more suffering. Sermon over!

Enter Ixtab, the Mayan goddess of suicide we see as depicted in the Dresden Codex. Her name means “woman of the rope.” Ixtab is depicted as hanging from the sky by a rope which is coiled around her neck. Her eyes are closed in death and on one of her cheeks is a black circle which represents the discoloration of the flesh due to decomposition.

It is believed that those who committed suicide or died by hanging, together with slain warriors, sacrificial victims, priests, and woman who died in childbirth, went straight to eternal rest in paradise. Ixtab gathered them and brought them there. According to Wikipedia, It is here that “they enjoyed a delectable existence rewarded with delicious food and drink and resting under the shade of a pleasant tree, Yaxche, free from all want.”

I find this description of Ixtab very comforting. Although there is only this one surviving image of her, I would like to believe that this is how the goddess works in our world. She is the Mother of Compassion who comes to us in our most desperate hour and cradles us in her loving arms. She is, in the words of Jesus, the One who left the ninety-nine sheep on the mountains and went in search of the one that was lost until She found it. [Matt 18:12-13, Luke 15:3-6]

So, maybe it’s time for us to add this image of Ixtab to our iconography of the goddess. It might be very helpful to those who are coping with the loss of loved ones due to suicide.

Blessed be!

Ixchel: Mayan Goddess

One of the things I’ve noticed in the Pagan circles I’m a part of is a lack of god/goddess imagery from Central America. Most of what I’m accustomed to seeing is European or a precursor to European Pagan religion such as Roman and Egyptian. So, I’d like to remedy this situation and introduce you to a few of the goddesses I encountered during my time in Mexico. Let’s start with my favorite: Ixchel.

According to the Ix Chel Center (http://www.holisticnp.com/ixchel.html), Ixchel is the ancient Maya goddess of fertility & healing. “Ix” means goddess of the feminine. “Chel” means rainbow or light. In other words, she is the: Lady of the Rainbow, Goddess of the Rainbow and Lady of Sacred Light. She is always associated with bodies of water, lakes, streams, rivers and creeks. Anywhere you would be likely to see a rainbow.

cat-1.46-ixchel-detail-dresden

Ixchel: Dresden Codex

The predominant image of Ixchel comes from the Dresden Codex which is the oldest surviving book from the Americas and dates back to the 13th or 14th century. Here, she is portrayed in her Crone aspect. The symbols which surround her are as follows:

Serpent—The serpent is a powerful symbol in ancient Mayan culture. It represents may things including wisdom (Google Vision Serpent), rebirth, transformation, initiation, and Divine communication.

Water Jug—This vessel is symbolic of the womb and speaks of Ixchel’s role as midwife and goddess of childbearing. It also speaks of her power as a healer and one who brings new life into the world.

Crossbones—These are seen on her back. It is a Mayan symbol of foreboding/warning. It may indicate that over time Ixchel morphed into a warrior goddess in addition to her healing/birthing powers. Needless to say, she is a goddess to be reckoned with!

2c7485dfd2036c2ed82cd6d0879fef34In addition to the Dresden Codex, other symbols which may accompany Ixchel speak of her Maiden and Mother aspects:

Moon—Scholars disagree regarding whether this symbol is attached to Ixchel. However, it makes perfect sense to me that it is associated with this powerful deity. The Moon is a Mayan symbol of regeneration and birth which ties in with the serpent and water jug found in the Dresden Codex. It also speaks of shadows and mystery which are common attributes of the goddess in most ancient cultures.

Rabbit—The rabbit is often synonymous with the moon in Mayan symbology. It is also a symbol of fertility in many cultures.

According to The Gods and Symbols of Ancient Mexico and the Maya by Mary Miller and Karl Taube, “At the time of the Spanish Conquest, Ixchel was a prominent Maya goddess, patroness of childbirth, pregnancy, and fertility. Women from all over Yucatan made long pilgrimages to seek her attention at shrines on Cozumel and Isla Mujeres…She also appears to be a patroness of of weaving, divination. and midwifery.” To add to the observation that few sources agree on Ixchel’s true identity, they add “She is probably not the beautiful young weaving woman given form in a number of Jaina figurines. Nor is there reason to think that she is the beautiful young moon goddess of Classic Maya art with whom her name has been widely identified: that young woman, sometimes depicted within the crescent of the moon, does not bear the name Ixchel or Chac Chel.”

So Ixchel came to represent many things to the Mayan people throughout the ages including other aspects I have not mentioned in this post such as earth goddess and patroness of weaving. Her image may be a powerful one for us to utilize as we contemplate and work with the Divine energy of the goddess.

Blessed be!

Discernment Ritual

00

Builders of the Adytum Tarot

We used this closing ritual at last month’s Welcoming Circle. It’s a group ritual but can be adapted for solitary practitioners. The topic for the night was how do we discern our call/vocation, i.e. what we were put on this earth to accomplish, which is usually different from what we do to pay the bills.

DISCERNMENT RITUAL

ANOINTING WITH BRIGID OIL—David Taliesin

May Brigid, Keeper for the Sacred Flame,
Give you wisdom and illumination tonight.

[Recipe for this oil is in Scott Cunningham’s excellent book “Incense, Oils and Brews”]

CANDLE LIGHTING—Traditional Gaelic. Light a white altar candle and say the following:

Brigid, Sublime Woman, Quick flame,
Long may you burn bright!
You give us the invitation
to life everlasting.

CALLING THE QUARTERS—adapted from Llewellyn’s Sabbat Essentials, Imbolc: Rituals Recipes and Lore for Brigid’s Day + Brigid: History, Mystery and Magick of the Celtic Goddess

We summon the Powers of East—
Brigid’s bright powers of Dawn!
As you bring light to the Spring,
Bring light to our work.
Hail and Welcome!

We summon the Powers of South—
The blazing fires of Brigid’s Forge!
Shed all that does not aid our work!
Fortify our work! Let it change the world!
Hail and Welcome!

We summon the Powers of West—
The healing powers of the Well!
May our work flow and grow!
May it stir and summon the depths of possibilities!
Hail and Welcome!

We summon the powers of North—
The strength of the Cold Mountains!
Freeze all adversaries! Solidify our desires
With the weight of frozen rock!
Hail and Welcome!

Reach to the sky: By the Powers of the Fiery Arrows!

Reach to the ground: By the Powers of the Green Earth!

Extend your arms to your sides:
Goddess Brigid, Goddess of Fire and Water,
We call you and invite you to the circle we have cast this night.
Goddess of the Sacred Well and Keeper of the Flame,
We ask that you bring your power and wisdom to this circle tonight.

Brigid, Goddess of the Forge, we honor you
And ask for your help and enlightenment in our work tonight.
Hail and welcome!

DISCERNMENT RITUAL—David Taliesin

02Ground and center. Connect with both the earth energy below and the Divine energy above. Let it fill your whole being until you feel like your body is full of light.

When you feel peaceful and focused, look at the Tarot Card image in front of you. Use it as an icon to center your thoughts and think about the work the Divine has called you to do. Record any thought that come to mind during this time of meditation. [I chose several images for participants to use from the wonderful black and white Builders of the Adytum Tarot. I offered the Fool, the Magician, the High Priestess, The Moon and Strength/Courage.]

When you are finished writing, take a tea candle and light it from the center pillar, and set it on the altar. Watch the flames of illumination grow as each person adds their candle to the altar.

Take a candle with you tonight, along with the image you selected. Use it in the coming weeks to further reflect on your calling/vocation.

DISMISSING THE CIRCLE—adapted from Llewellyn’s Sabbat Essentials, Imbolc: Rituals Recipes and Lore for Brigid’s Day + Brigid: History, Mystery and Magick of the Celtic Goddess

Great Brigid, Goddess of the Flame and Goddess of the Well,
We thank you for joining this magic circle tonight
And for the energy and wisdom you have bestowed upon us.
You will remain forever in our hearts!
We bid you farewell!

Farewell to the Powers of North—
As you came in peace, now go in peace,
But leave strength in our work.
Keep our adversaries in your icy grasp!
We bid you farewell!

Farewell to the Powers of West—
As you came in peace, now go in peace,
But leave your misty whispers on our work.
Wash away the obstacles to our manifestations!
We bid you Farewell!

Farewell to the Powers of South—
As you came in peace, now go in peace,
But leave your sparks of manifestation.
Allow the embers of our work to grow.
We bid you farewell!

Farewell to the Powers of East—
As you came in peace, now go in peace.
Though the day passes, the work of the sun remains.
Remain also with our work.
We bid you farewell!

BRIGID BLESSING
May my words be as considered as poetry,
May I reflect on all I do or say,
May I meditate on those things important spiritually
May I seek to know more of the lore
May I research what I am curious about
and what will enable me to grow
May I seek to know great knowledge,
May I acknowledge the intelligence of others
May I comprehend what I seek to learn and apply those lessons
May I know that seeking wisdom is not the same as being wise.
May I be a child of Brigid.

The circle is open but never unbroken
Because it is a circle woven in love.
Whatever energy is left in this space
We return to the earth with a spirit of gratitude.
Merry meet and merry part, and merry meet again.
