Meditative Coloring

Coloring books for adults are a HUGE business these days. As someone who has used art as a meditative device for years, I’m so excited that other people are getting in touch with their creative side through the use of coloring pages. If you’re like me and you can’t draw worth a lick (collage is my medium), these pages are an easy way to get in touch with your creative spirit. Most people find this activity to be a relaxing and calming experience so give it a try.

61xOY+7dPAL._SX258_BO1,204,203,200_In looking for the right book, I came across three that are of interest to magical people. The first is the absolutely stunning Celtic Spirit: Knotwork Designs For Inner Peace by Cleopatra Motzel. I came across it at my local Barnes & Noble bookstore but it’s also available on Amazon. The artwork is nearly museum quality and the book itself is bound beautifully. There are fanciful illustrations of the four elements and each page explores spiritual concepts such as “breaking free” and “coexistence.” Absolutely stunning!

61+N4OBj0uL._SX258_BO1,204,203,200_The same day I also found The Ancient Alchemy Coloring Book: Celtic Knots, Mandalas, and Sacred Symbols by Cher Kaufmann. Although some of the images are rather simple there are a number of them that are really beautiful. Kaufmann draws from many diverse spiritual traditions and includes an index of the images at the back of the book for further study. It is also available in both of the places I mentioned.

yhst-137970348157658_2409_1774658148Finally, there is Goddesses Coloring Book by Mary Noble. There are some really cool images of the Divine Feminine in this one and although I don’t own it yet, it’s on my list. It’s available on Amazon as well.

So grab some high quality colored pencils or markers and enjoy this fun and relaxing art form.

When Bad News Comes Our Way

benchman

Several weeks ago my next door neighbor was brutally murdered. Needless to say, when I heard the news my emotions ran the gamut from disbelief to anger, from sadness to fear. I took a break from posting to give myself time to process what I was feeling and begin the healing process.

What do magical people do when bad news comes our way? What coping skills, energy work and rituals do we have at our disposal that are helpful during difficult times? Here are a few things I’ve done over the past few weeks that I found helpful. Perhaps they will be useful to you as you deal with traumatic life events.

Give yourself permission to feel what you feel. Don’t suppress your emotions. Find a safe and healthy way to express them.

Remind yourself that you won’t recover quickly. Grief takes time so don’t fool yourself into thinking that you’ll get over bad news quickly.

Justice will not come through the legal system. Even if my friend’s murderer spends the rest of his life in prison, justice will not be served. Yes, I will feel a sense of closure but there is no way to balance the scales of justice when a life is taken before its time. Accept this and let it go.

Ground and shield. Ground and shield. Do I even have to say this? Even if you’re tired, make yourself do this. Invite into your body the healing energies of the earth and ask the Divine Presence (however you name it) to send you healing energy as well.

Meditation is a must. There are a number of exercises on my blog to help you get rid of negativity and “circular thinking” where you just can’t let go of thinking about the tragedy you are experiencing. Even if you only do this a few minutes a day, it will help.

Spend time out in nature. Nature always awakens a sense of beauty and wonder in us. Take a daily walk if the weather permits. The exercise will do you good as well.

Burn some frankincense resin on your altar. Scientific studies have proven what we magical people have always known: frankincense has a strong anti-depressant and anti-anxiety effect.

Carry a mojo bag that helps reinforce healing and/or protection. Everyone has their own way of doing this. Here are a few suggestions that work for me:

Simple Healing Mojo Bag:
Black Kyanite (destroys negative energy and never needs to be recharged)
Blue Kyanite (aids in healing and calms the mind)
Rose Quartz (to promote feelings of love) or Sodalite (for healing, peace)
1 pinch of lavender and rosemary (dried from my garden)

Place in a light blue mojo bag which can be anointed with healing oil. Charge on your altar before carrying it in your pocket.

Simple Protection Mojo Bag:
Black Kyanite (destroys negative energy and never needs to be recharged)
Blue Kyanite (aids in healing and calms the mind)
1 pinch dried hyssop, rosemary and basil (dried from my garden)

Place in a black mojo bag which can be anointed with protection oil. Charge on your altar before carrying it in your pocket.

Use essential oils in anointing oil or an oil diffuser to help promote healing. Never underestimate the power of smell to help restore your emotional and spiritual balance.

Simple Healing Anointing Oil:
4 parts Lavender essential oil
2 parts Rosemary essential oil
1 part Lemon essential oil

I add these to either jojoba or olive oil. You can also use them on a diffuser that’s made for essential oils. Other healing oils you can use are peppermint and eucalyptus.

Find a special ritual to say good-bye if the bad news you receive involves a loss or death. Only you can determine what form this will take. I placed a white jar candle on my altar with a picture of my friend behind it. After it was lit I sprinkled some vervain on it (to help her spirit transition to the other side) and crumbled dried rose petals (for love) that I had harvest from my garden earlier this summer.

Know when to seek professional help. There is absolutely nothing wrong with seeking the help of a doctor or counselor when you are overwhelmed by bad news and nothing seems to be making you feel any better.

That’s my list! Dear readers, be good to yourself when bad news comes your way. Trust your intuition in discovering what works best for you. Share any ideas you have in the comment section of this post. Blessed be!

Frankincense: Good For Your Soul!

Frankincense-carteri-R

Many years ago, on a trip to Egypt, I had the opportunity to tour a factory that manufactures essential oils and sample what they had to offer.  I must have sniffed 20-25 different scents that day, but the one that captivated me the most was frankincense. In fact, I bought a rather large bottle of it and joyfully brought it home with me.

For many years it mostly sat on my shelf, except when I added it to massage oil. Now that I’ve been awakened to my magical self and learned of its properties, I appreciate it so much more. It has become an important part of my ritual, energy and healing work. I can’t imagine my spiritual practice without frankincense being a part of it.

This week I came across an article that made me smile. It appears that science has finally caught up with what we magical people have known for years: frankincense is literally good for your soul!  A 2008 article in Science Daily reported that a team of scientists from Johns Hopkins University and Hebrews University in Jerusalem have proven that burning frankincense resin activates ion channels in the brain that alleviate anxiety and depression.

Specifically, the incense activated a protein TRPV3 which is common in the brains of all mammals. The effect on the mind has a strong anti-depressant and anti-anxiety effect which can leaves us feeling open and relaxed. It helps our minds to rest and simply perceive the world around us.

If you’ve never used this fragrant resin, or it’s essential oil, I cannot recommend it highly enough. Click HERE for a previous post I wrote on its magical properties.

Trump 11 – Justice

“He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God? (Micah 6:8 NRSV)

Justice and vengeance are not the same thing. It’s tempting, when this card appears in a reading, to assume that justice is directed outward toward those who have “wronged” us. We may think this card is telling us they “will get what they deserve.” However, I believe the Justice card points more inward than it points outward. It’s telling us that something is out of balance in our lives. Therefore, it’s time for us to do some serious soul searching and figure out what we need to change in order to balance the scales.

justice02

Rider-Waite version

The symbolism on the Rider Waite version of the card is unmistakably clear. The scales of justice are a very old symbol. In fact, I have a copy of a papyrus in my home where Anubis is weighing the deeds of an individual after they have died. The two-edged sword that is pointing upward symbolizes divine justice as well as the ability to discern between right and wrong. Hebrews 4:12 tells us that “the word of the Divine is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing until it divides soul from spirit, joints from marrow; it is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” As a symbol, this sword tells us that the Divine is active in this process of justice-making and will help us to discern the way forward.

The two pillars and veil behind the king also echo the design of the High Priestess card which speaks of the knowledge that comes from within; the hidden mysteries and intuition of the Divine Feminine. The thematic link between these two cards is clear.

justice01

DruidCraft version

The DruidCraft version of Judgment is more simplified. The king is replaced with a queen which solidifies its tie with the High Priestess card. The scales of justice and the two-edged sword are also present, but there is also the wonderful addition of an owl. In Native American spirituality the owl represents wisdom and intuitive knowledge so it’s a perfect symbol for this card.

When Justice appears in a reading it is telling us not to make any hasty decisions. Instead, it is telling us to take a hard, honest look at our lives.  It may be time for us to be more disciplined or it may be a time for us to be more loving and forgiving of ourselves. What will it take to bring our lives more into balance? This is what the Justice card is asking us.

Spell for Reconciling a Broken Family/Friend Relationship

love_spells

I have come across lots of spells to help strengthen the relationship between lovers, but have never come across one to help repair the other loving relationships in our lives. This one came to me in a moment of absolute clarity as I sought to add some healing energy to repair a broken relationship with an in-law. Hopefully it will be of use to you as well.

Two pink spell candles with holders
Healing anointing oil
A piece of white ribbon
Name papers

Assemble everything before casting the circle. When ready to the the ritual, anoint the candles with healing oil. Write the name of each person involved in the situation and place them under the candles.  Repeat the following chant as you move the two candles on your altar closer and closer:

“That which is separate must now come together.”

When the bases of the two candles touch, tie them together at the base with white ribbon and let them burn until extinguished.

Simple Healing Oil (David Taliesin)
4 drops Rosemary essential oil
2 drops Lavender essential oil
1 drops Lemon essential oil
1/4 cup olive oil (best quality)

Mix ingredients together and consecrate/empower the oil in a manner that feels right for your particular spiritual path. You can double the amount of drops if you like a stronger scent.

Essential Oil Sprays

My DIY/Crafty soul is definitely going to try this!

witchesbrew's avatarCauldron and Brew: A Witch's Blog

As you my lovely reader may have noticed, I love essential oils.  I was first exposed to them as a kid.  Lavender oil was my great-grandmother’s remedy for everything from bruises to stinky sinks.  I rediscovered them as an adult and have been experimenting ever since.

One way I use them is combined with water and crystals in an atomizer spray bottle.  I love how this diffusion method envelopes the user in a cloud of scent.  Also I’m asthmatic, so incense isn’t tolerable in my home.  And when my practice began in college, I couldn’t have candles for ritual so I used sprays to scent my dorm room.  Eventually I began making them myself.

Pagan and Christian Magicians, Unite!

brigidnewcollage

“For several centuries, the majickal practices in Europe were continued by those Judeo-Christian magicians working with the grimoire traditions. While certainly folk majick traditions were being practiced among the townsfolk even while Paganism was being suppressed by the church, those who practiced magic in the Jewish and Christian traditions secretly thrived, documenting their workings in majickal books known as grimoires. The grimoire traditions went on to influence the majickal revivals of England, particularly the Golden Dawn and later, the work of Gerald Gardner, Alex Sanders, and many of the Wiccan founders that influence Witchcraft today.”—Laurie Cabot’s Book of Spells and Enchantments

When I started this blog, nearly a year ago, my intention was to explore the connections between Pagan and Christian spirituality. Along the way, both my blog and my spiritual path have taken some wonderful and unexpected turns. I jokingly call myself a “spiritual mutt” because I have always found great wisdom in every faith tradition I have studied. I take what works for me from each and leave the rest at the side of the road for others to enjoy!

In my magical world, Brigid and Jesus don’t seem to have a problem working together. In fact, it feels a bit like a family reunion with a long lost relative. I know this is blasphemy to some and nonsense to others but it is the path I am destined to walk. I am a bridge-builder, a peacemaker and a healer who seeks to bring the Pagan and Christian communities together.

If my theory is correct, we’ve been borrowing from and been inspired by each other for a very long time. This difficult dance is best illustrated by Brigid who went from being a Pagan triple goddess to a Christian saint and back again. During this time Brigid remained Brigid because she is part of the Great Mystery some of us call the Divine. We, however, have changed over the centuries and so have the words and rituals we have attached to her.

My point is this…let’s continue the journey together. Pagans, be open to your magical Christian sisters and brothers and know that we walk in solidarity with you and are learning much from you. Christians, set aside all the ridiculous misinformation you’ve heard about your Pagan sisters and brothers and get to know them personally. They have much wisdom to share about the way the Divine works in our world and can help you to establish a deeper and more harmonious relationship with nature. Blessed be and Amen!

Witch Tips: When Sh*t Hits the Fan

Lots of good wisdom here!

witchesbrew's avatarCauldron and Brew: A Witch's Blog

So you’re going about your day, lalala, and BOOM! You get fired.  Or your grandfather dies.  Or the entire bottom of your car rusts out and falls off on I-93 and now you have a concussion, a broken leg, and no car.  Well, shit.  Now what?  Your emotions are all over the place and things literally might be falling apart.  Well, take a breathe my friend and use your witchy skills to heal and to move through this time in your life.

Obviously I am not a doctor, licensed therapist, or minister.  I’m just someone who has been through some tough times and feel called to offer some friendly, well-intentioned, and free advice.  So, you know, take some of this with a grain of salt.
