It’s hard to know what to say after hearing the result of this presidential election. Apparently the patriarchy, the good old boy system, is alive and well and has reared it’s ugly head in it’s most frightening and oppressive form. I spent the day after the election in a fog, hugging those who needed it, and fighting back tears constantly. I also stayed away from Facebook and TV because I couldn’t bear to hear another word of bad news or face the sadness and fear of my friends.
The next day I sat down to write my sermon for this coming Sunday. I trashed what I had written earlier in the week because our nation changed overnight and a new truth needed to be proclaimed. I grounded myself, breathed deeply and began writing. To my surprise, a sense of peace and clarity came over me, which is always a good sign. The words flowed powerfully and prophetically. By lunchtime the first draft was completed.
This morning I looked over what I had written, made a few tweaks in language and phrasing, but knew I had written what needed to be said. People are counting on me to say something to comfort and inspire them this coming Sunday. I think my sermon will do the job nicely.
How are you doing and feeling? If you’re freaking out I hope that you reach out to someone who can comfort you. If you are female, gay, lesbian, transgendered, Muslim, black, disabled, or a host of others who have been the target of hate during this election cycle, I hope you will surround yourself with people who make you feel safe and loved. This is a time of mourning for many of us. It’s a time to rage against the dying of the light; to weep and wail if our souls demand it. It’s a time to take good care of ourselves and do those things that nurture our bodies, minds and spirits.
Then, when we’re ready, we all need to roll up our sleeves and get to work. We need to reawaken the warrior spirit which lies in each of us. Those of us who are magical people need to strengthen our craft and use it as a force for transformation in our nation. Those of us who are healers will have a full plate as we reach out to those who, with good reason, are fearful of what comes next. Those who are political activists will need to keep a watchful eye on every step this new administration makes and do what we can to put a spotlight on those things that are unjust and harmful.
Arise, brothers and sisters! Claim your power. The Divine has got your back! There is much work to be done. I will not cower in fear nor remain silent. I will work tirelessly for equality for all people and for the healing of this planet. Carpe Diem! Seize the Day! So mote it be! Amen!
