Ixchel: Mayan Goddess

One of the things I’ve noticed in the Pagan circles I’m a part of is a lack of god/goddess imagery from Central America. Most of what I’m accustomed to seeing is European or a precursor to European Pagan religion such as Roman and Egyptian. So, I’d like to remedy this situation and introduce you to a few of the goddesses I encountered during my time in Mexico. Let’s start with my favorite: Ixchel.

According to the Ix Chel Center (http://www.holisticnp.com/ixchel.html), Ixchel is the ancient Maya goddess of fertility & healing. “Ix” means goddess of the feminine. “Chel” means rainbow or light. In other words, she is the: Lady of the Rainbow, Goddess of the Rainbow and Lady of Sacred Light. She is always associated with bodies of water, lakes, streams, rivers and creeks. Anywhere you would be likely to see a rainbow.

Ixchel: Dresden Codex

The predominant image of Ixchel comes from the Dresden Codex which is the oldest surviving book from the Americas and dates back to the 13th or 14th century. Here, she is portrayed in her Crone aspect. The symbols which surround her are as follows:

Serpent—The serpent is a powerful symbol in ancient Mayan culture. It represents may things including wisdom (Google Vision Serpent), rebirth, transformation, initiation, and Divine communication.

Water Jug—This vessel is symbolic of the womb and speaks of Ixchel’s role as midwife and goddess of childbearing. It also speaks of her power as a healer and one who brings new life into the world.

Crossbones—These are seen on her back. It is a Mayan symbol of foreboding/warning. It may indicate that over time Ixchel morphed into a warrior goddess in addition to her healing/birthing powers. Needless to say, she is a goddess to be reckoned with!

2c7485dfd2036c2ed82cd6d0879fef34In addition to the Dresden Codex, other symbols which may accompany Ixchel speak of her Maiden and Mother aspects:

Moon—Scholars disagree regarding whether this symbol is attached to Ixchel. However, it makes perfect sense to me that it is associated with this powerful deity. The Moon is a Mayan symbol of regeneration and birth which ties in with the serpent and water jug found in the Dresden Codex. It also speaks of shadows and mystery which are common attributes of the goddess in most ancient cultures.

Rabbit—The rabbit is often synonymous with the moon in Mayan symbology. It is also a symbol of fertility in many cultures.

According to The Gods and Symbols of Ancient Mexico and the Maya by Mary Miller and Karl Taube, “At the time of the Spanish Conquest, Ixchel was a prominent Maya goddess, patroness of childbirth, pregnancy, and fertility. Women from all over Yucatan made long pilgrimages to seek her attention at shrines on Cozumel and Isla Mujeres…She also appears to be a patroness of of weaving, divination. and midwifery.” To add to the observation that few sources agree on Ixchel’s true identity, they add “She is probably not the beautiful young weaving woman given form in a number of Jaina figurines. Nor is there reason to think that she is the beautiful young moon goddess of Classic Maya art with whom her name has been widely identified: that young woman, sometimes depicted within the crescent of the moon, does not bear the name Ixchel or Chac Chel.”

So Ixchel came to represent many things to the Mayan people throughout the ages including other aspects I have not mentioned in this post such as earth goddess and patroness of weaving. Her image may be a powerful one for us to utilize as we contemplate and work with the Divine energy of the goddess.

Blessed be!

Discernment Ritual

00

Builders of the Adytum Tarot

We used this closing ritual at last month’s Welcoming Circle. It’s a group ritual but can be adapted for solitary practitioners. The topic for the night was how do we discern our call/vocation, i.e. what we were put on this earth to accomplish, which is usually different from what we do to pay the bills.

DISCERNMENT RITUAL

ANOINTING WITH BRIGID OIL—David Taliesin

May Brigid, Keeper for the Sacred Flame,
Give you wisdom and illumination tonight.

[Recipe for this oil is in Scott Cunningham’s excellent book “Incense, Oils and Brews”]

CANDLE LIGHTING—Traditional Gaelic. Light a white altar candle and say the following:

Brigid, Sublime Woman, Quick flame,
Long may you burn bright!
You give us the invitation
to life everlasting.

CALLING THE QUARTERS—adapted from Llewellyn’s Sabbat Essentials, Imbolc: Rituals Recipes and Lore for Brigid’s Day + Brigid: History, Mystery and Magick of the Celtic Goddess

We summon the Powers of East—
Brigid’s bright powers of Dawn!
As you bring light to the Spring,
Bring light to our work.
Hail and Welcome!

We summon the Powers of South—
The blazing fires of Brigid’s Forge!
Shed all that does not aid our work!
Fortify our work! Let it change the world!
Hail and Welcome!

We summon the Powers of West—
The healing powers of the Well!
May our work flow and grow!
May it stir and summon the depths of possibilities!
Hail and Welcome!

We summon the powers of North—
The strength of the Cold Mountains!
Freeze all adversaries! Solidify our desires
With the weight of frozen rock!
Hail and Welcome!

Reach to the sky: By the Powers of the Fiery Arrows!

Reach to the ground: By the Powers of the Green Earth!

Extend your arms to your sides:
Goddess Brigid, Goddess of Fire and Water,
We call you and invite you to the circle we have cast this night.
Goddess of the Sacred Well and Keeper of the Flame,
We ask that you bring your power and wisdom to this circle tonight.

Brigid, Goddess of the Forge, we honor you
And ask for your help and enlightenment in our work tonight.
Hail and welcome!

DISCERNMENT RITUAL—David Taliesin

02Ground and center. Connect with both the earth energy below and the Divine energy above. Let it fill your whole being until you feel like your body is full of light.

When you feel peaceful and focused, look at the Tarot Card image in front of you. Use it as an icon to center your thoughts and think about the work the Divine has called you to do. Record any thought that come to mind during this time of meditation. [I chose several images for participants to use from the wonderful black and white Builders of the Adytum Tarot. I offered the Fool, the Magician, the High Priestess, The Moon and Strength/Courage.]

When you are finished writing, take a tea candle and light it from the center pillar, and set it on the altar. Watch the flames of illumination grow as each person adds their candle to the altar.

Take a candle with you tonight, along with the image you selected. Use it in the coming weeks to further reflect on your calling/vocation.

DISMISSING THE CIRCLE—adapted from Llewellyn’s Sabbat Essentials, Imbolc: Rituals Recipes and Lore for Brigid’s Day + Brigid: History, Mystery and Magick of the Celtic Goddess

Great Brigid, Goddess of the Flame and Goddess of the Well,
We thank you for joining this magic circle tonight
And for the energy and wisdom you have bestowed upon us.
You will remain forever in our hearts!
We bid you farewell!

Farewell to the Powers of North—
As you came in peace, now go in peace,
But leave strength in our work.
Keep our adversaries in your icy grasp!
We bid you farewell!

Farewell to the Powers of West—
As you came in peace, now go in peace,
But leave your misty whispers on our work.
Wash away the obstacles to our manifestations!
We bid you Farewell!

Farewell to the Powers of South—
As you came in peace, now go in peace,
But leave your sparks of manifestation.
Allow the embers of our work to grow.
We bid you farewell!

Farewell to the Powers of East—
As you came in peace, now go in peace.
Though the day passes, the work of the sun remains.
Remain also with our work.
We bid you farewell!

BRIGID BLESSING
May my words be as considered as poetry,
May I reflect on all I do or say,
May I meditate on those things important spiritually
May I seek to know more of the lore
May I research what I am curious about
and what will enable me to grow
May I seek to know great knowledge,
May I acknowledge the intelligence of others
May I comprehend what I seek to learn and apply those lessons
May I know that seeking wisdom is not the same as being wise.
May I be a child of Brigid.

The circle is open but never unbroken
Because it is a circle woven in love.
Whatever energy is left in this space
We return to the earth with a spirit of gratitude.
Merry meet and merry part, and merry meet again.

Ash Wednesday: Our Connection to the Divine

child-ashes

In my tradition, we celebrated Ash Wednesday last night, February 1st. Kimberly Winston wrote the following about the origins of this ritual in the Huffington Post in an article entitled Ash Wednesday Explained: The Meaning Behind the Dust:

“There is no mention of Ash Wednesday in the Bible. But there is a tradition of donning ashes as a sign of penitence that predates Jesus. In the Old Testament, Job repents “in dust and ashes,” and there are other associations of ashes and repentance in Esther, Samuel, Isaiah and Jeremiah. By the 10th century, the monk Aelfric tied the practice, which dates to the eighth century, to the period before Easter, writing, ‘Now let us do this little at the beginning of our Lent that we strew ashes upon our heads to signify that we ought to repent of our sins during the Lenten fast.’ By the 11th century, the practice was widespread throughout the church — until Martin Luther, the Protestant reformer, threw the practice out in the 16th century because it was not biblically based. There’s no Lent in the Bible, either, though many Christians see it as an imitation of the 40 days Jesus spent fasting and battling with Satan in the desert.”

These days, a number of Christian denominations place ashes in the sign of the cross on the foreheads of worshippers including Roman Catholics, Lutherans, Episcopalians, United Methodists, Presbyterians, UCC and Moravians. Yet, in spite of its widespread use, I found plenty of Christian writers bashing the ritual because of its “pagan” origins.

So I did a little digging, and this is what I found:

  • It appears that in ancient Nordic Pagan religion, ashes were placed above the brow to ensure the protection of the Norse God, Odin. The practice spread to Europe during the Viking conquests. It also appears that this ritual was done on a Wednesday, the day named for Odin, Odin’s Day.
  • In Hinduism vibhuti, meaning “sacred ash,” place three horizontal lines across their foreheads and other body parts to please the god Shiva.

(If you have any further information and/or insight to share on this subject, please do so in the comment section. Thanks!)

There are a number of Christian blogs and web sites who bash the ritual of Ash Wednesday and warn people not to observe it because of it’s Pagan origins.  If you’ve read my blog, you know I find this humorous because Christianity incorporated and adapted numerous beliefs and rituals from their Pagan brothers and sisters. Ashes are only the tip of a very large iceberg!

Personally, I love the ritual because it gives me a fresh perspective as I enter the season of Lent: “Remember you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” These are the words that accompany the ashes that are placed on foreheads in the sign of the cross. The words and ashes remind us that life is short and we should life it to the fullest. The cross reminds me of my connection to Jesus who calls me to live a life that is centered in love of the Divine, love of neighbor, and love of self. The cross also reminds me to consider what destructive patterns of living and thinking I need to let go of, in order that new ones can be nurtured in my life.

This year, as I received my ashes, I also thought of its connection with my Pagan friends who have also used ashes in ritual to remind them of their connection to the Divine. I wouldn’t have it any other way!

Tonantzin, Ixchel and Mary, the Mother of Our Lord

guadalupe

Our Lady of Guadalupe, photo by David Taliesin

My blog has been silent for a while because I’ve been on a sabbatical in Mexico where I toured a number of ancient Mayan sites and modern cities in the Yucatán Peninsula. One of the things I noticed in my travels is that the Virgin Mary is everywhere, Our Lady of Guadalupe to be more specific. I saw her in the zócalos (public squares) of every town I visited. Statues and paintings of her likeness adorn the shrines of many homes accompanied by flowers, strings of lights and other bling. There was not a Roman Catholic church I visited where she could not be found somewhere in the building. In many cases, her presence outshined Jesus!

The reason why I bring this up is that in my study of ancient Pagan religions in Europe, there is a common pattern of the Church adapting and absorbing the Goddess and Pagan religious culture in order to win converts. My favorite example of this is my beloved Brigid who became St. Brigid in Ireland. (You can read more about her in my posts on Imbolc.) The Church simply could not keep a good Goddess down!

This got my thinking…with Mary having such a strong presence in Central and South America, did the same adaptation occur with ancient Mayan and Aztec Goddesses? This topic sounds like a great doctoral thesis to me, but I have no desire to pursue such a degree! Here is some of the information I found upon my return to the United States:

tonantzin

Tonantzin Statue, National Museum of Anthropology, Mexico City

Professor Emeritus of Anthropology, Alan Sandstrum, Indiana University Purdue University Ft Wayne, has this to say on the subject, “According to tradition, the Virgin appeared to a Nahua man named Juan Diego in December 1531 on Tepeyac Hill, north of Mexico City, where there was a shrine dedicated to the female Aztec earth deity Tonantzin. To this day, in Nahuatl-speaking communities (in other communities as well), the Virgin continues to be called “Tonantzin” and her appearance is commemorated on December 12 each year. Tonantzin means “Our Sacred Mother” in the Nahuatl language and she continues to be connected symbolically to fertility and the earth. It is not known precisely how the pre-Hispanic deity Tonantzin became connected to the Christian Virgin of Guadalupe, however, we can assume that many people of the time believed that her appearance represented a return of the Aztec mother deity” [wwww.mexicolore.co.uk]

He also says that “In the minds of many people living within and outside of Mexico, the Virgin of Guadalupe and the ancient Tonantzin are one and the same. This sacred figure can be seen to represent the emergence of Mexico as a unified nation born out of the destructive encounter between European and pre-Hispanic civilizations.” If you’re interested in reading more about this subject, download Eric Wolf’s article entitled The Virgin of Guadalupe: A Mexican National Symbol, that appeared in the Journal of American Folklore 71:34-39.

ixchel

Ixchel, Dresden Codex

Female deities can also be found in ancient Mayan religion as well. The most notable of these is Ixchel. According to http://mayamoonhealingarts.com/ixchel-maya-goddess/ “Ix”, in Maya, means Goddess or the feminine sacred, and “Chel” means rainbow or light, thus her full name translates as – Lady Rainbow, Goddess of the Rainbow or Lady of Sacred Light. She is seen as being manifested in the traditional Pagan triple Goddess roles of Maiden, Mother and Crone. As Maiden, she is the Goddess of weaving, fertility and childbirth. As Mother, she is the goddess of fertility, motherhood and the moon. As Crone she is the Goddess of medicine and the moon.

Could it be that our Mayan and Aztec forebears valued the Goddess’ presence in their lives and were unwilling to give her up in order to convert to Christianity? Could it be that Our Lady of Guadalupe is a veiled representation of the Goddess in a Christianized form? I am not even remotely an expert on this subject. However, I see the same connections here that I do in European religious history. I know some people will be highly offended by what I write in this post, but people seem to be highly offended about everything these days! I’m just asking questions and looking for connections. If anyone out there has more information on this subject than I do, I’m all ears!

Powerful New Year’s Resolutions

5ccacd00-1ae8-4a14-b670-6abcb8e9b2ec

This time of year my Facebook feed is loaded with posts from friends who plan to make New Year’s resolutions. The content is always the same: “I’m going to loose weight, eat healthy food, go to the gym, travel more, live a more peaceful life, (you fill in the blank).” Yet, my suspicion is that most of these resolutions will fall apart by the end of January. Why is this the case? My friends are well intentioned. All of these things are noble goals to achieve. However, each of these resolutions requires a lot of work and effort on a daily basis in order for them to become a reality. Unfortunately, most people don’t have the fortitude to see them through.

Those of us who are magical people understand that resolutions must have power behind them. They have to go beyond words posted to Facebook. Adelina St. Claire, in The Path of a Christian Witch, makes the following observation: “All you need is will. There is no more to say about it. It is so simple, and yet it is impossible for us to fathom. And this can’t be taught. You can only be made aware of its importance and its effects. Jesus taught that if you have faith the side of a mustard seed, you could uproot trees. This was not merely the metaphor for the importance of putting our faith in God. It is the essence of will. I believe he meant this in the most concrete of forms. When you truly believe that you influence the world, the world responds in kind.”

When you think about it, magical people make resolutions all the time, but we do it more than once a year. Some of us call them spells or charms. Others speak of the need to focus our intention or will. The truth behind this magical language is the belief that the Universe/Divine will not hear our request unless we speak it with clarity and power. Our spell does not have to be perfect. We do not have to have the right color candle or herb. We simply need to focus your intention, make our will known, and believe that it will come true.

This does not mean the Universe/Divine will grant us everything we ask for. Thankfully the Universe/Divine knows what’s best for us and will grant those requests that are for the highest and greatest good of all concerned. It also means we might have to work a particular spell/request over and over again in order for a shift to occur. This is especially true for big things such as sending healing energy to someone with an illness, opening up a new career pathway, letting go of bad habits and destructive behaviors, etc.

So, there’s nothing wrong with making New Year’s resolutions but don’t forget to put some power behind them! Don’t simply post them of Facebook and expect something to happen. Instead let us write them on our hearts, put our personal energy into them, enlist the help of the Universe/Divine and the elemental spirits, and see what wonderful things come our way in 2016!

Lovingkindness Meditation

loving-kindness

The Lovingkindness Meditation is an ancient Buddhist tradition that can be a powerful, transformative experience. In a world that is full of hostility, tension and strife, I think it’s an essential spiritual practice for everyone. You can find many versions of this meditation online, including guided imagery that takes you through the entire visualization process. Give it a try and see how it transforms the way you perceive the world around you. Blessed be!

1.  Close your eyes.  Sit still and upright, relaxed and alert

2.  Focus on your breathing.  With each exhale let your body relax more deeply.

3.  When you are ready, repeat this mantra inwardly which is the traditional lovingkindness meditation:

May I be filled with lovingkindness.
May I be safe from inner and outer dangers.
May I be well in body and mind.
May I be at ease and happy.

As you say this mantra simply picture yourself as you are now, warts and all. Hold that image in a spirit of lovingkindness. Feel free to adapt the words in any way that speaks powerfully to you. Repeat the mantra over and over, letting the feelings permeate your body, mind and spirit. Practice this meditation for at least a few weeks until you feel a deep sense of lovingkindness toward yourself.

4. After you feel like you’ve achieved a stronger sense of lovingkindness toward yourself, it’s time to expand the circle. Begin your meditation by focusing the lovingkindness mantra on yourself for a few minutes. Then choose someone close to you who has had a profound and positive impact on your life. Picture them and direct this mantra toward them:

May you be filled with lovingkindness.
May you be safe from inner and outer dangers.
May you be well in body and mind.
May you be at ease and happy.

5. Where you go with this next is up to you. You can use the lovingkindness meditation to focus positive energy on someone who always seems to rub you the wrong way. Then note how your interactions with this person change after you say this lovingkindness mantra for a while.

6. You can also expand the lovingkindness circle to include your family, your neighborhood, your city, your country, and finally the world. There are infinite ways you can use this powerful meditation so experiment with it and see what works for you!

EMPOWERMENT SPELL—David Taliesin
Strips of paper, pen
Cauldron, red or white candle
Yarrow
Dragon’s Blood Oil

Light the candle and anoint it with the Dragon’s Blood Oil. Place it in the cauldron. Write on strips of paper the things you need to let go of that make you feel paralyzed, fearful and powerless. Place a pinch of yarrow in the flame of the candle.

Then, one by one, place each strip in the flame and let it burn as you verbally state the opposite of what’s on the paper., i.e. what you would like to see come into your life. Let the paper burn out in the cauldron.

Ex. If you wrote “feeling powerless” on the paper, state something like “I will be strong and confident.”

PIGEON’S SPELL FOR STRENGTH
Purpose: To help you pluck up the strength to go out and do what you need to do.

Step One – Find an acorn and hold it in your hand. Recite:

The mightiest of trees springs from a tiny acorn.
Help me to remember that the small can be vicious.
Bless me with the strength and will of the oak.
Grant me the voice of the thunder.
Help me to roar when I would normally squeak.
And help be to make my voice louder than my insecurities.

Step Two – Keep the charm on your person whenever you need to call on strength.

DISMISSING THE CIRCLE

Guardians and Ancestors of the North, powers of Earth, thank you for your presence and grounding energy in our circle tonight. Stay if you will. Go if you must. We bid you farewell!

Guardians and Ancestors of the West, powers of Water, thank you for your presence and positive emotional energy in our circle tonight. Stay if you will. Go if you must. We bid you farewell!

Guardians and Ancestors of the South, powers of Fire, thank you for your presence and courageous energy in our circle tonight. Stay if you will. Go if you must. We bid you farewell!

Guardians and Ancestors of the East, powers of Air, thank you for your presence and inspirational energy in our circle tonight. Stay if you will. Go if you must. We bid you farewell!

Great Spirit, who is known to us by many names, thank you for your holy and uplifting presence in our circle tonight. Continue to guide us as we may our way through these perilous and uncertain times. We bid you farewell!

And now the circle is open but never unbroken
Because it is a circle woven in love.
Whatever energy is left in this space
We return to the earth with a spirit of gratitude.
Merry meet and merry part, and merry meet again.

Courage Spells

courage-rock

In my last blog post I wrote about reclaiming our power in the aftermath of the election. Here are a collection of courage spells that might be helpful to you.

COURAGE SPELLS

Some people wait for someone else to identify them, to recognize them and tell them who they are, what they should do and what they shouldn’t do. Usually it starts with our parents and then continues in school, religion, marriage, work, and friendships. Witches practice our craft to reforge our identity, to choose who we want to be, and to take responsibility for ourselves and our own happiness.—Laurie Cabot’s Book of Spells & Enchantments

COURAGE SPELL—www.spellsofmagic.com
Relax and meditate. Chant softly, getting louder for about three minutes and courage will come to you. Chant the following:

Burning flame,
Cooling wind,
Summon courage from within,
I call on all my strength and love,
Send me power from above.

FIGHT THE DOUBT DEMON—http://thelivingspellbook.tumblr.com/strength
In the gloom of winter we all feel discouraged by the snow and cold. Light a black candle or a white, and surround with salt. Feel a protective light surrounding you say:

Demons of doubt
Who nip at my hells,
Although you’re not real
Get thee behind me.
Get thee away
From my circle of light.
You are banished this day.

PIGEON’S SPELL FOR STRENGTH—http://thelivingspellbook.tumblr.com/strength
Purpose: To help you pluck up the strength to go out and do what you need to do.

Step One – Find an acorn and hold it in your hand. Recite:
The mightiest of trees springs from a tiny acorn.
Help me to remember that the small can be vicious.
Bless me with strength and will of the oak.
Grant me the voice of the thunder.
Help me to roar when I would normally squeak.
And help be to make my voice louder than my insecurities.

Step Two – Keep the charm on your person whenever you need to call on strength.

EMPOWERMENT RITUAL—www.spellsofmagic.com
This ritual will increase your magical powers and energy. The purpose of this ritual is to tap into your own personal lifeforce and amplify it into a personal statement of self confidence and strength. Afterwards, when you feel yourself dragging in one area or another, concentrate on the appropriate symbol in the appropriate color for a bit, and you will find yourself tapping back into the energies you established in the ritual.

SUPPLY LIST:
A set of crayons including red, orange, yellow, green, sky blue, dark blue, violet, black, grey, white, silver, and gold.
A medium to work on–cloth or paper on which all the colors will show up.
A red candle
A fiery scented incense, such as sage or cedar.
Face the east and say: Spirits of the East, powers of Air, we ask that you be present at this spell-working. Help us find inspiration and visualize the symbols clearly that we may partake of their essence.

Face the south and say: Spirits of the South, powers of Fire, we ask that you be present at this spell-working. Help us find the spirit within to empower the symbols and tune into their color energy.

Face the west and say: Spirits of the West, powers of Water, we ask that you be present at this spell-working. Help us to seek the mystery within, that the symbolsI draw here may work upon my emotions for my Highest Good.

Face the north and say: Spirits of the North, powers of Earth, we ask that you be present at this spell-working. Help us to manifest the symbols in the third-dimensional world so that their energies may become a part of our physical existence.

Face the sky and say: Father Sky, we ask that you watch over us in this spell-working. Lend us your wisdom so that we may safely link our inner vision with our outer selves.
Place your hands on the earth and say: Mother Earth, we ask that you watch over us in this spell-working. Let us ground ourselves deeply in you and draw on your strength and energy to sustain us in our work.

Face your altar in the center of the circle and say: Sacred center, Spirit of all that is, of whom we are all only aspects, unite this sphere into a protected space for the spell-working we plan to do here.

Using the red crayon, visualize the color as life essence. Draw the first symbol below the body shape that comes to your mind when you think of strength and power.

Now take the orange crayon. This color represents vitality, potency, courage. Draw the first symbol of these qualities that comes to mind slightly above and to the left of the last symbol.

With the yellow crayon in hand, concentrate on intellect, and your request for knowledge. Draw a symbol of this directly to the left of the human body shape.

Using the green crayon, visualize expansion, abundance, prosperity, growth, love. When you have felt its energy, draw a symbol of above and to the left of the human body.

Take up the sky blue crayon, and feel it’s energy of expression, communication, spiritual gain, joy, and self-achievement. Draw a symbol of those directly above the human body.

Using a dark blue crayon, draw a symbol to the lower-right of the last symbol. This one should represent synthesis and inner wisdom. It should align with the green shape.

In violet, which represents spirituality and guidance, draw a symbol of those traits directly to the right of the red central sign.

White is used to link the life-force. Draw a symbol that represents a cycle or strong bond below and to the right of the central symbol.

This main pattern is complete. It should resemble a circle of colors and symbols surrounding the body.

Now, trace from the central body, directly to the left. Here, you should come upon the yellow symbol. To the left of that symbol, you will draw another sign, in silver. Hold the silver crayon and feel it’s energy, imagine the journey you are embarking on, and draw a symbol of it.

Take the gray crayon and visualize flexibility, endurance, persistence and resolve needed to accomplish the changes you desire. When you feel it’s energy, draw a symbol of those strengths at the very top/center. (above the human body, and above the light blue sign.)

The gold crayon represents activity. Draw your symbol of activation to the far-right (lined up horizontally with the silver symbol).

Using black, feel and see the changes you want occurring, the power of this ritual going to work. Draw a symbol of this directly beneath the red symbol under the body. (The bottom of the page, centered.)

Give blessings to all invoked gods, goddesses, and spirits, using a chant to each quarter like this:

“Spirits of the east, powers of air, thank you for your presence and aid in this work. Depart in peace, my thanks and blessings.”

Open the circle, release the energy, and say:

“To all spirits visible and invisible that have been present in this ritual, depart in peace, my thanks and blessings.”

Hang the resulting picture up somewhere where you can see it often. When you need any of the specific traits energized in each symbol, simply think of that particular color and symbol as depicted in your masterpiece!

Now What? Reclaiming Our Power In the Aftermath of the Election

Brigid the Warrior

It’s hard to know what to say after hearing the result of this presidential election. Apparently the patriarchy, the good old boy system, is alive and well and has reared it’s ugly head in it’s most frightening and oppressive form. I spent the day after the election in a fog, hugging those who needed it, and fighting back tears constantly. I also stayed away from Facebook and TV because I couldn’t bear to hear another word of bad news or face the sadness and fear of my friends.

The next day I sat down to write my sermon for this coming Sunday. I trashed what I had written earlier in the week because our nation changed overnight and a new truth needed to be proclaimed. I grounded myself, breathed deeply and began writing. To my surprise, a sense of peace and clarity came over me, which is always a good sign. The words flowed powerfully and prophetically. By lunchtime the first draft was completed.

This morning I looked over what I had written, made a few tweaks in language and phrasing, but knew I had written what needed to be said. People are counting on me to say something to comfort and inspire them this coming Sunday. I think my sermon will do the job nicely.

How are you doing and feeling? If you’re freaking out I hope that you reach out to someone who can comfort you. If you are female, gay, lesbian, transgendered, Muslim, black, disabled, or a host of others who have been the target of hate during this election cycle, I hope you will surround yourself with people who make you feel safe and loved. This is a time of mourning for many of us. It’s a time to rage against the dying of the light; to weep and wail if our souls demand it. It’s a time to take good care of ourselves and do those things that nurture our bodies, minds and spirits.

Then, when we’re ready, we all need to roll up our sleeves and get to work. We need to reawaken the warrior spirit which lies in each of us. Those of us who are magical people need to strengthen our craft and use it as a force for transformation in our nation. Those of us who are healers will have a full plate as we reach out to those who, with good reason, are fearful of what comes next. Those who are political activists will need to keep a watchful eye on every step this new administration makes and do what we can to put a spotlight on those things that are unjust and harmful.

Arise, brothers and sisters! Claim your power. The Divine has got your back! There is much work to be done. I will not cower in fear nor remain silent. I will work tirelessly for equality for all people and for the healing of this planet. Carpe Diem! Seize the Day! So mote it be! Amen!
